Yields fall through dusk
Stocks breathe beneath oil-lit clouds
Friday waits, watchful

Thursday came in hot—September producer prices up 1.3% for the month and 6.3% for the year, retail sales up 0.8%—and still the tape refused to break. Tech sank early, the Nasdaq climbed out of a hole, the Dow caught a 557-point ride on defensive and value buying, and bonds kept buying the quiet. The 10-year yield slid to roughly 5.09%, down from 5.295% Wednesday morning, while TLT rose 1.4% to 79.97.

That was the day’s strange American rhythm: inflation roaring, oil climbing 1.2% to 96.18, yet yields and the dollar moving lower. The dollar fell 0.5% to 102.00 and opened a fresh daily downswing. Lower yields and a softer dollar gave stocks the relief valve they needed. SPY took the air; QQQ was still catching its breath.

Trend and Rotation

SPY closed at 771.79, up 0.3%, still below its 775.55 pivot but safely above 761.46. The daily downswing entered day two, while the one-week weekly downturn reversed and restored week four of the larger upswing. QQQ closed at 728.00, down 0.1%, its daily downswing stretching into day six and toward an unusually long 2σ run. The VIX eased 2.4% to 16.46.

Underneath, the map remained RISK-OFF. Energy and health care led; technology weakened; discretionary, staples, utilities and real estate improved; financials, industrials, materials and communications lagged. It was not panic. It was migration—money leaving the bright windows of offense and moving toward shelter.

Historically, RISK-OFF weeks have been followed by a 10% or greater SPY decline within 13 weeks about one time in six, compared with roughly one in eight for all weeks. That is a risk gauge, not a prophecy. Friday’s close makes the reading official.

The range measures distance, not destiny. SPY needs only to cross 775.55 and turn its daily trend higher. QQQ, already deep into time, needs 740.35 to end the slide; 720.08 is the lower edge of its ordinary range. A 10-year close above 5.151% would be the first hint that the bond rally is tiring. A dollar below 102.42 keeps the relief valve open.

What to Watch

1. SPY above 775.55: daily and weekly trends would point up together again.

2. QQQ at the edge of time: Friday marks roughly 2σ for the downswing; watch 720.08 below and 740.35 above.

3. Bonds after the rush: TLT’s upswing and the 10-year yield’s downswing reach about 1σ in duration.

4. The dollar below 102.42: continued softness would support the equity relief trade.

5. The settled rotation signal: a Friday RISK-OFF close would mark a change from last week’s RISK-ON, FADING reading.

Before Friday’s opening bell come October options expiration and industrial production; tonight brings Fed Chair Warsh’s fireside chat with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. Then the road narrows into the close, where the week tells us what it meant: whether bonds bought safety for a day, or whether the market has begun a deeper turn.
